Yes, it’s a bit chilly. This is frequently the case in the UK at this time of year, but why all the fuss? Stoke the fire, put the kettle on and flick through this issue of Bath Life to discover the rich selection of wintry compensations in store for you in the city this fortnight.
First off, put your hands together and give Komedia a big Bath welcome (page 28). The live entertainment venue opens on 13 November on Westgate Street, in the old Beau Nash cinema, and promises to revitalise this corner of the city. There’s also a chance to catch one of the world’s most prestigious photographic exhibitions; the Royal Photographic Society’s 151st International Print Exhibition runs until 30th November, with 124 extraordinary images taken all over the world (page 46).
Food is a favourite winter solace, and along with our usual restaurant review and recipe we’ve come up with our top suggestions for a special Christmas lunch with friends and colleagues. The dreaded C word pops up quite a lot in this issue, I’m afraid – it’s virtually impossible to avoid using it – and we’ve sneaked in some suggestions for presents and gifts (page 43, 70) along with some winter warmers that you’ll probably want to keep for yourself (page 68). More festive madness coming up soon in issue 119!
One more thing...
Arguably the hottest news of the week is that Jamie’s Italian is now open for business in Milsom Place! After dining by special invitation during the ‘friends and family’ week, the Bath Life team can confirm that it’s everything we’d hoped it to be, and more; we’ll be bringing you a full review very soon.
Inspired by the Duke of Edinburgh Awards at the age of 13, father-of-three David Hempleman-Adams became the first Briton to win the 52nd Coupr Aeronautique Gordon Bennett on the 10th October – the world’s oldest balloon air race established by James Gordon Bennett, first staged in 1905.
He and flying partner Jonathan Mason flew nearly 1,200 miles - from Albuquerque in New Mexico and landing four days later near Milwaukee in Wisconsin.
Another amazing achievement to add to this fact is that he was the first man to travel to both North and South Poles, as well as climb the highest mountains on every continent.
As a nice aside, the race finished on his 52nd birthday! They are the first British team to win the coveted prize.
